BLOODSTONE

Hi Thomas. How are these new songs born and at what point and moment of your musical journey, what do they continue and what do they add new?

Ciao Thomas.

Thomas

Bloodstone is my first album. It’s old school rock with no machines, no autotune, no click. Through the tracks I was able to explore different horizons, different moods. Each track is an invitation to travel, to take part in a story. Most of my songs are about travelling, about freedom… Hit the road. But also about sex, love, relationships with nature or between humans. I am very happy with the result. A great team effort.

Mettiti in viaggio.

“Bloodstone” refers to the heliotrope as the stone variously believed to be magical in past centuries and which Albertus Magnus called the “stone of Babylon”? Or what else were you referring to?

O a cos’altro ti riferivi?

Thomas

Indeed the Babylonians used heliotropes for divination. The Egyptians also. This stone allows to enter in communication with the divine, the sacred. It is also the protective stone for travelers.

The song speaks about a person who decides to go in the world of the divine to meet the river man, the smuggler of soul to take revenge (we do not know of whom or what). They meet the soul weavers, “moires” which will allow him to go to the in-between world… I do not speak more about the song because the video clip will be released in a few months.

Can you introduce us to the musicians and additional musicians who played on “Bloodstone”?

Thomas

I’m very lucky to work with talented & great musiciens. Diego Higueras (guitar), Jacob Miller (bass & backing vocals), Nicolas Scalliet (drums & backing vocals) & Maxime Siroul (hammond).

The whole rehearsal and recording process so far has been a lot of fun and very gratifying. During this difficult pandemic period, instead of complaining about everything, we pull our fingers out and spent lot of time working on the album.

We had the chance to release a song – Bad Business – whit Fred Lani from Fred & the Healers, one of the greatest blues guitar players in Belgium. It’s a beautiful and successful collaboration.

What is your vision of the Seventies through Bloodstone?

Thomas

I feel the spirit and the energy of “Bloodstone” are the best summed up in the words: phat, dirty, bluesy and rocking. No auto-tune, no click during the recording sessions. We can hear the breath of tube amps on almost every song of the album – it’s pure, it’s roots. That the seventies vision of rock music isn’t it?

Davide

What are the main contents in the Bloodstone lyrics?

Thomas

Road, liberty, journey, freedom, love… and sex of course.

Strada, libertà, viaggio, libertà, amore… e ovviamente sesso.

Davide

In the song “Tatanka” (“bison” in the Sioux language), a song in which you also used the Iroquois word “orenda” (supernatural and spiritual force that pervades all animate and inanimate objects in the universe), you wanted in some way to pay homage to the Native Americans and to some other America?

Thomas

I’ve always been fascinated by North American culture. So yes, through this song, I really wanted to pay homage to native Americans. We all know the tragic fate of Native American tribes, especially during the conquest of America by European settlers (and later, the conquest of the North West by the new American state). It’s a song where I put myself in the place of one of these natives who sees his territory being consumed little by little. It’s sad but it’s the reality. And everyone can draw parallels with other places on earth as well.

Davide
Even if there was no link, “Mad vagabond” made me think of Rimbaud and his first escapes, especially the one in which he walked to Brussels. Does music serve as an escape from reality? Or to face it and fight it?

Thomas

I hadn’t thought of Rimbaud but it’s a nice comparison. I really like it!

When I wrote this piece (it’s one of my first compositions) I was inspired by the Beat Generation and especially Jack Kerouac. Hit the road to regain your freedom. Kidnapped your own existence instead of becoming a passive spectator of it.

I was living in Brussels at that time, right in the center of the city. I was studying jazz music at the conservatory. Even though I spent some very good years and met some great people there, I felt overwhelmed. And that’s why I wrote Mad Vagabond. I wanted to step into the shoes of a hobo.

How was this partnership with the Italian Vrec Music Label born?

Thomas

I had the chance to meet an Italian publisher Jean-Pierre Purcaro. One day after a concert, he accosted me saying that he wanted to help me integrate the world of Italian rock music. I had a hard time believing it at first. But I trusted him and I’m very happy today. And I can’t wait to come and defend the album with our neighbors from the south. Italy has always been a dream destination for me so I can’t wait to share my music with Italian rock lovers.

All’inizio ho fatto fatica a crederci.

The first use of the phrase “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” dates back to 1969, on the pages of LIFE magazine, which in reference to the youth protest movements of the time wrote: Counterculture has its sacraments in sex, in drugs and in rock. ”But, beyond this phrase, is rock still a form of counterculture?

Thomas

You don’t need big gold chains, big cars or naked chicks to rock. And unfortunately in the music business today we see that a lot. So yes, rock is and will always be a counterculture music. At least some types of rock.

Today in Belgium, rock is a “niche” music. But with what we can see in other countries such as Italy for example or in the Scandinavian countries where rock has always been in the front line, rock is coming back to the fore. Rock is not dead I’m sure of that.

Davide
When did you realize you were going to be a musician and a singer?

Thomas

When at 13 years old I saw that playing music attracted girls. So I said to myself: Ok Tom, let’s do it!

I started with the bass guitar. But I was a poor bassist player. So I stole my sister’s guitar and started playing Nirvana in my bedroom hoping that one day I could play on stage.

Davide
What is the sexiest rock song ever written and sung in your opinion? Which one, on the other hand, is the one that still gives you the chills like the first time you listened to it?

Thomas

I don’t think there’s ONE sexiest song ever written but many.

But when I think of a song that talks about sex in a pleasant way… I think of course at “Make it wit chu” from Queens of the stone age. I just love this song! Of course there is the essential “Whole lotta love” from Led Zeppelin one of the best song about it.

“Sex is on fire” from Kings of Leon or “Again” from Lenny Kravitz are great songs speaking about sex & love. And the tremendous “Give it away” from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Love & sex are what we should ultimately give away freely (and not only material things). Give it away!

Dalli via!

Davide

What will follow?

Cosa seguirà?

Thomas

A new album is in preparation and will be release at the end of summer 2023. Can’t wait to share it with my fans.
