Hi Shane and welcome back to the pages of Kult Underground. We talked 12 months ago about your previous work, “Your Favorite Band”. What happened in the meantime and what was the genesis of “Intrepid feelings”?

Shane

Hi Davide, Thank you once again for expressing interest in Miss Massive Snowflake. Intrepid Feelings continues the way the band has worked since Covid hit. I recorded the basic tracks at my studio, Kirks’ Grocery, in Billings, MT. I usually write on guitar and voice, but I started all of these with synth, bass, and programmed drums. I sent these raw tracks to Andy Brown in Portland, OR, where he recorded / enhanced the drumming, added more synths, and production. He then passed that along to the various and usual collaborators Ty Herman, Jeanne Kennedy, Jacopo Andreini, and first-time collaborator, Arrington de Dionyso. Andy always takes the final crack at production. I love working with him.

The songs grew and are more cinema/soundscape inspired than usual, but these are not live songs, just recordings. A way to keep collaborating.

Are there more sonic and psychedelic or experimental atmospheres in this work than in the previous song form of “Your favorite band”?

Shane

The songs are extensions of tracks like Una Cura and Florian’s Hair on YFB. It really harkens back to how I made music when I was in Rollerball. Building songs from sounds, experimenting, collaborating, and not worrying too much about structure. The songs came out as feelings to me, instead of stories, which is how they usually start. We are letting go of pop music slowly, which is interesting because I left Rollerball to follow a more pop structure.

Davide

La band è rimasta la stessa? Chi ha suonato in questi quattro nuovi pezzi, ospiti tutti inclusi? In quale modo con quale metodo vi avete lavorato?

Has the band remained the same? Who played these four new pieces, all guests included? How did you work and with which method?

Shane

The band started in 2004-2008 with an acoustic guitar and a computer playing backing tracks. From 2008-2021 Jeanne Kennedy has played bass in the band, but we split ways in 2021, as she pursues her solo project, Subvert Savant. Andy Brown has been drummer / keyboard / producer since 2010 and remains a core unit of what we do. Ty Herman has played guitar with the group since 2018 and has become an integral part of the songwriting process. Currently the live group includes Riley Kriskovich on drums and Caleb Haynes(Hey, ILY and Gray Joy) on bass. We’ve been playing around Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The band continues to morph and change.

Abbiamo suonato in Montana, Wyoming e Colorado. La band continua a trasformarsi e a cambiare.

Veniamo ai titoli: Intrepid Feelings, quindi Praise / Love / Joy / Exhaustion… (Lode / Amore / Gioia / Esaurimento). Perché dunque “Sentimenti Intrepidi” e in particolare questi quattro stati d’animo o, appunto, del sentire o sentirsi?

Let’s come to the titles: Intrepid Feelings, then Praise / Love / Joy / Exhaustion … So why “Intrepid Feelings” and in particular these four states of mind or feelings?

Shane

I pushed myself to write from a non-lyrical stance for these four tracks. Praise is a shout-out to African Head Charge’s Songs of Praise album. It has that dubby bass sound that I love so on their early albums. Love is named because of my love of Jeanne Kennedy. She wrote the vocal line for this song, and I believe it may be her final contribution to the band. Joy comes from the lyrics I sang about marrying my fiance, Mary Serbe, this year, and Exhaustion is cause I think we are all just so exhausted with the world and trying to keep a band together. Arrington’s wind playing is a workout.

The apparent positivity of praise, love, joy however “collapse” in the last track of a “exhaustion”. Is there a reason for this path to end in something apparently negative and pessimistic, a exhaustion, even if sometimes pessimism is a resource and helps predict or solve problems?

Shane

Ha ha, I keep answering the question with the preceding one. I’m about three-quarters good-times and a quarter over it all. I believe after this ep and the new 7” single out in May, MMS will start following a different path. I’m 51 and the other members I’m working with now are between 21-25 years old. I’m looking for inspiration from younger players, and teaching them what I’ve learned.

For decades the United States of America has been a lighthouse for international music, especially in rock and experimentation. In your opinion is this still the case today or has something changed?

Shane

I live in Montana and the main styles are Americana, Cover Bands, and Country. Just traditional and non-threatening 100%. I crave the experimentation of Portland, that I was part of for so long. Most of my inspiration comes from bands from Europe or South America now, but I love listening to other languages.

Speaking of things that we have all had to face with firmness of mind and courage (or intrepidity), we left each other still in the midst of the pandemic, which has had a negative impact on the world of music and entertainment in general. Has anything changed now in this regard for you and Miss Massive Snowflake? How has music helped or continues to help?

Shane

Music always helps. I feel isolated through Covid and Geography, but I run a DIY performance space here that keeps me abreast of things like fifth wave emo and chiptune among the younger peeps. We have a good noise/experimental scene here, even if it is really only like 10 people producing. People are coming out more and more for shows again. We started hosting shows around 6 months ago and the response has been very positive.

I tried for a decade to keep MMS together while we all lived in different places, and we succeeded. Releasing albums and touring, but I missed the weekly rehearsals of bands that lived in the same city, so it’s been nice to start up again with local people.

The music market has profoundly changed and, among other things, today it is preferred to publish short and fast works as singles, E.P. or mini-album. So why just four songs and not an album with more tracks? How do you think this widespread tendency to publish only a few things at a time affects the creativity and work of an artist?

Shane

I work continually on my music and projects. This is four songs because that is what I had to say with this style. It’s a layover, a rest from the usual, before I head back into lyric-based songs. I don’t really follow how or what way to do things. I’ve tried but am happy to just continue growing musically and artistically. It’s also fun to show young musicians old ideas and techniques. I mentioned earlier that we have a 7” single coming out in May and that is because I wrote a grant to the State Government for it. Amazing it happened. We just experiment and throw stuff at the wall, and release it when it seems ready as a piece.

Will the release, scheduled for March 11, be only on music streaming and digital download platforms or will there also be a release on cd or other physical medium?

Shane

There will be no physical media for this release. A change for us, but why not?

Davide

Cosa seguirà?

What will follow?

Shane

I’m finishing mixing up another ep with my project Dusty Tears. A group that features Jamie Smith and I. It’s another recording project. The new Miss Massive Snowflake quartet is writing new material and it seems funkier and doomier than what has been happening. Tasteful drumming, fat bass, swerving and distorted guitars, killer lyrics.

Thanks Davide, for caring, it means a lot, and it’s fun to think about the work instead of just pushing it out.

Davide

Grazie e à suivre…
