FREEDOM TRAIL

“A tratti riflessivo e sensuale.

The Freedom Trail project has deep roots. You came together as a trio in 1998 while still at school, reunited in 2011, and recorded this fifth album in July 2022 after the delays caused by the pandemic. What does it feel like to finally see an album released that has accompanied so many stages of your lives and of recent history? What does it encapsulate from your shared past, and what has been distilled from all those experiences?

Michel

Freedom Trail really represents a long chapter of our lives. We started playing together as teenagers in 1998, and although there was a period when we each followed different paths, we never lost the feeling that this trio had something unique. When we reunited in 2011, it felt very natural, almost as if no time had passed. The album itself had a similarly long journey. We recorded it in July 2022 with the Luxembourg Philharmonic, but because of the pandemic and the complexity of such a production, it took several years before everything was ready. Of course, we would have preferred to release it earlier, but in retrospect the waiting gave us perspective. Today we hear it not as a snapshot of one moment, but as the result of more than two decades of friendship, musical trust, and shared experiences. In many ways, Freedom Trail is a distillation of everything that has shaped us: our love of jazz, our curiosity about other musical worlds, our years of performing together, and the confidence to allow our music to evolve naturally.

Davide

Beyond its reference to Boston’s famous Freedom Trail, the title of this album—and of its opening track—also evokes music and art in general, which have always been regarded as the highest expressions of freedom because they transcend the limits of everyday language and social conventions. What kind of “Freedom Trail” were you hoping to trace, follow, and highlight?

Michel

The title Freedom Trail comes from one of our best-known and most frequently performed compositions. It has been part of our repertoire for many years and has gradually become something of a signature piece for the trio. For this album, Vince Mendoza created a completely new orchestral arrangement that gave the composition an entirely new dimension, so it felt like the natural choice as the title of the album. At the same time, the title has taken on an even broader meaning. Today, the idea of freedom feels especially relevant. We live in a world that has become increasingly uncertain and polarized, and values like freedom, openness and mutual respect should never be taken for granted. Although the music isn’t intended as a political statement, these ideas inevitably resonate more strongly today than they might have a few years ago. The word Trail is equally important to us. It reflects the journey we have made together as a trio over nearly three decades. By bringing together orchestral versions of compositions from different periods of our career, Freedom Trail becomes a musical journey through our own history. It looks back at the path we’ve travelled together, while at the same time looking ahead to whatever comes next.

Davide

Michel, you created part of the new arrangements together with an undisputed master such as Vince Mendoza. Freedom Trail presents a large-scale symphonic reinterpretation of your repertoire. Beyond being a declaration of artistic freedom that breaks down the boundaries between jazz and classical music, do you feel that many of the colors within your music had remained hidden in the intimate setting of the trio? How did you use the orchestral palette to repaint these compositions, and what criteria guided your selection of the pieces?

Michel

Altre volte crea spazio, atmosfera o contrasto emotivo.

One of the fascinating aspects of this project was discovering how much of the music was already present beneath the surface. Vince Mendoza and I didn’t want the orchestra simply to make everything bigger or louder. Instead, we wanted to reveal dimensions that were already implicit in the compositions. Sometimes the orchestra functions almost like another improvising voice. At other times it creates space, atmosphere or emotional contrast. Vince has an extraordinary ability to make an orchestra breathe like a jazz ensemble, which made the collaboration feel remarkably organic. The pieces were selected because we felt they offered different possibilities for orchestral development. Some naturally invited rich harmonic colors, while others allowed the orchestra to become part of the rhythmic conversation rather than merely accompanying the trio.

Davide

The recording grew out of a live performance with the Luxembourg Philharmonic. What was it like to bring the intimate chemistry of a trio that has played together for more than twenty years into the immense sonic world of a symphony orchestra? How did this expansion shape the musical interplay between the trio and the Luxembourg Philharmonic?

Michel

The biggest surprise was how quickly it stopped feeling like a trio accompanied by an orchestra. Very early in the rehearsals, it began to feel like one musical organism. Of course, the scale is completely different. In a trio, communication happens almost instinctively through eye contact and tiny musical gestures. With an orchestra, everything has to be prepared much more carefully. But once that framework is established, there is still enormous room for expression. The Luxembourg Philharmonic approached this project with great openness. Rather than trying to play “jazz,” they listened deeply and embraced the flexibility that this music requires. That created an atmosphere where the orchestra and the trio could genuinely respond to one another instead of simply coexisting.

Davide

In the liner notes, the renowned critic and writer Brian Morton describes the album as “at times reflective and sensual” and “essential listening for our modern age.” Do you recognize yourselves in this idea of “modernity” as applied to orchestral jazz today? What does modernity mean to you in this ongoing pursuit of renewal, and how do you see the dialogue between the present, the past, and the musical future toward which you aspire?

Michel

For us, modernity has very little to do with trying to sound contemporary for its own sake. Music becomes modern when it reflects who you are and the world you live in. Jazz has always evolved by absorbing influences rather than protecting boundaries. The same is true for classical music. We never felt that combining these traditions was an attempt to erase differences; instead, it was about creating a dialogue where each tradition enriches the other. Our compositions are written today, but they are naturally connected to everything we have listened to throughout our lives, jazz, classical music, folk traditions, contemporary music and many other influences. Modernity is not about rejecting the past; it is about allowing the past and the present to speak to each other in a way that leaves room for the future.

Davide

Your relationship with Joshua Redman began in 2014 at the Charlie Free Festival. Emotionally and artistically, what does it mean when one of the world’s greatest saxophonists embraces the music of a trio that began in a classroom in Luxembourg? What kind of dialogue emerged in the studio between his saxophone, the core of the trio, and the colors of the Luxembourg Philharmonic?

Michel

Joshua has been part of our story for quite a long time now. We first met in 2014, and what struck us immediately was not only what an extraordinary musician he is, but also how generous and open he is as a person. When someone like Joshua agrees to become part of your music, it is of course an honour. But once we started playing together, it never felt like “the famous guest soloist.” It simply felt like another musical conversation. One of Joshua’s greatest qualities is that he always serves the music. He doesn’t impose himself; he listens. That was especially important in this project because there were already many layers, the trio, the orchestra, Vince’s arrangements. Joshua found exactly the right balance between bringing his own unmistakable voice and becoming part of the larger sound. I think that’s why his presence feels so natural throughout the album.

Davide

Looking through the track credits, one notices a deliberate alternation of composers. The first half of the album is dominated by Michel Reis’s compositions (Freedom Trail, Never Seen Again, Cross Country, Catherine’s Song). Then the atmosphere shifts with two consecutive compositions by Paul Wiltgen: Viral and Home Is Nearby. The sequencing of an album is especially important in an era of increasingly fragmented and playlist-driven listening. How was the running order of Freedom Trail constructed, and what journey did you want listeners to experience?

Michel

Crediamo ancora molto nell’idea dell’album come dichiarazione artistica compiuta.

We still believe very much in the idea of the album as a complete artistic statement. Even though many people discover music today through individual tracks or playlists, we wanted Freedom Trail to tell a story from beginning to end. The opening pieces gradually invite the listener into the orchestral world. Then the music becomes more intimate and personal, particularly with Paul’s two compositions, Viral and Home Is Nearby, which bring a different emotional perspective. From there the album slowly moves toward a quieter and more reflective ending. We never wanted dramatic contrasts for their own sake. Instead, we tried to create a natural emotional flow, where every piece prepares the listener for the next one.

Davide

After your collaborations with Laborie Jazz and Double Moon Records, this is your third album with the Italian label CAM JAZZ, following Once In A Blue Moon and SLY. CAM JAZZ is internationally respected for the exceptional acoustic and engineering quality of its recordings, as well as for an extraordinary catalog that includes several Grammy-nominated releases. How does Freedom Trail fit into the artistic, technical, and collaborative relationship you have built with the label? How important was it to have a production team committed to such sonic excellence when dealing with the acoustic complexity of a symphony orchestra?

Michel

This is already our third album with CAM JAZZ, and over the years we’ve developed a relationship based on mutual trust. One of the reasons we enjoy working with them is that they genuinely care about the music first. They never try to shape the artistic direction of a project. Instead, they create the conditions for us to realise our own vision. For a project like Freedom Trail, that trust was especially valuable. Recording a trio together with a full symphony orchestra involves enormous technical and artistic challenges, and we always felt that CAM JAZZ shared our commitment to achieving the highest possible quality. They have built an international reputation for producing recordings with exceptional sound, and this project really benefited from that experience.

The cover of Freedom Trail depicts a vast plateau stretching toward solitary mountains beneath the soft colors of twilight. The connection between mountains and silence has long been explored by philosophers and mountaineers alike: it is not simply the absence of sound, but a stillness that heightens every detail and helps us detach ourselves from the frenzy of everyday life. Goethe famously wrote, “Mountains are silent masters and make silent disciples,” suggesting that the higher we climb, the deeper we descend into ourselves. How did you choose this photograph? What does it represent for you, and how are this inner ascent and this silence reflected in the music of Freedom Trail? Similarly, what do you hope your music awakens and amplifies within the inner silence of those who listen?

Michel

The image immediately resonated with us because it reflects the atmosphere of the music rather than illustrating it literally. There is something about wide landscapes that creates both a feeling of freedom and a sense of perspective. They remind you how small you are, but at the same time they invite reflection. The silence suggested by the image is also important. Music doesn’t exist in opposition to silence, it grows out of silence and eventually returns to it. Some of the most meaningful moments on this album are actually the spaces between the notes. If listeners find their own thoughts, memories or emotions while listening, then the music has done its job. We don’t want to tell people exactly what to feel. We simply hope to create a space where something personal can happen.

Davide

You are widely regarded as the pioneers and foremost ambassadors of Luxembourgish jazz around the world. This fifth album, recorded together with the Luxembourg Philharmonic, almost feels like the completion of a full circle. Do you feel a responsibility to represent your country’s cultural scene abroad?

Michel

We certainly feel proud to come from Luxembourg. When we started as teenagers, the Luxembourg jazz scene was much smaller than it is today. Since then it has grown enormously, and today there are many outstanding musicians representing the country internationally. We don’t really think of ourselves as ambassadors when we go on stage. Our first responsibility is always to make honest music. But if our work has helped people discover Luxembourg as a place where creative music thrives, then that’s something we’re very grateful for.

Davide

The album concludes with two deeply evocative and emotional titles: Dante and Where The Heart Beats. In the second canto of Dante’s Inferno, there is a wonderful line that reads, “Such noble courage rushed into my heart,” describing the inner strength that awakens after passing through the confusion of the dark forest. What do these two pieces mean to you, and why did you choose to place Dante immediately before the finale? What atmosphere did you want to create for the conclusion of this musical journey—toward the place where the heart finally begins to beat again— and toward what vision of vitality, existence, and human connection are you leading the listener?

Michel

Where The Heart Beats offre un tipo di risoluzione diverso.

The final two pieces felt like the natural conclusion to the emotional journey of the album. Dante carries a certain tension and introspection. It isn’t necessarily about the literary figure directly, but the title inevitably evokes the idea of a journey through uncertainty toward clarity. Where The Heart Beats offers a different kind of resolution. It isn’t a triumphant ending. It’s quieter than that. It suggests arriving somewhere, not necessarily a physical place, but a place where you feel connected to yourself and to the people around you. We liked ending the album that way because it leaves the listener with a sense of openness rather than finality.

Davide

This album undoubtedly represents a milestone and one of the creative peaks of your career. Having joined forces with a full symphony orchestra, Vince Mendoza, and Joshua Redman, what is the next frontier for the Reis-Demuth-Wiltgen trio? What lies beyond the Freedom Trail?

Michel

One thing we’ve learned over the years is not to plan too far ahead. If someone had told us twenty years ago that we would one day record with Vince Mendoza, Joshua Redman and the Luxembourg Philharmonic, we probably wouldn’t have believed it. Every project we’ve made has grown naturally out of the previous one. We hope the next step will happen the same way. For us, the most important thing isn’t making each project bigger than the last one. It’s making sure that each one says something we haven’t said before. In that sense, Freedom Trail isn’t the destination. It’s simply another step along the journey.
